Strand Bookstore
828 Broadway, NYC (nr 3rd Avenue). Possibly the greatest
new & secondhand bookshop in the world. Gigantic stock over several floors,
including one recently added (but deliberately maintaining the slightly
grotty ‘secondhand’ look, because Fred Bass says “We don't want to look like
Barnes & Noble”!) Fred personally runs the huge central buying desk in the
middle of the floor. A real New York experience!

The Book Jungle
24 North Street, St.Leonards-on-Sea (near Hastings), East Sussex. Proprietor: The charmingly grumpy Michael Gowen. Incredibly cheap secondhand books on two levels. Self-Help is in the “Nutcase” section of the shop. Generous trade discount. Closed Mondays, Wednesdays, Sundays and whenever Mike feels particularly anti-social or he and Gilly are in the Mediterranean. Ph. 0142 4421187
Bookman’s Halt
127 Bohemia Road, St. Leonard’s-on-Sea, East Sussex. Always an excellent range of paperback fiction and interesting, well priced, non-fiction in three claustrophobic rooms. Proprietor Clive Linklater (author of “Reflections from a Bookshop Window”) has perfected a deceptively languid manner that masks an astute bookdealing brain. Trade discount. Closed lunchtimes, Sundays and probably also another day of the week. Ph 01424 421413
Paris
Shakespeare & Company
rue de la Bucherie, Quartier Latin, Paris. More a tourist destination than a serious bookshop, but good fun nevertheless. Almost on the banks of the Seine, Left Bank, near Notre Dame. English language books, travel guides, Sorbonne students, backpackers, pretentious tourists. Proprietor George Whitman assisted by his daughter and various American boys and girls.
