In the pre-dawn of June 3, 1969, a collision occurred between the Australian aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne and the American destroyer USS Frank K. Evans. Captain J. P. Stevenson, who was commanding the HMAS Melbourne was subsequently court-martialled by the Australian Naval Board and was Honourably Acquitted.
