The Selous Scouts was a special forces regiment of the Rhodesian Army, formed by the author of this book, that operated from 1973 until the reconstitution of the country as Zimbabwe in 1980. Named after the British explorer Frederick Courteney Selous (1851–1917), its motto was pamwe chete—a Shona phrase roughly meaning "all together", "together only" or "forward together".

The charter of the Selous Scouts directed them to "the clandestine elimination of terrorists/terrorism both within and without the country."

The story of the Rhodesian Army's legendary Selous Scouts and the twilight war they waged during the bush wars. This book is the definitive account of one of the most distinguished military units to ever fight in Africa. It contains previously unpublished material and excellent photo sections. An absorbing study of war in contemporary Africa.

"At last, the re-written, revamped version of Selous Scouts - Top Secret War. With new, previously unpublished material, including the roll of honour and full schedules of citations, awards and Wings lists. Formed in 1973 in the war-ravaged Rhodesia, the Selous Scouts, in a few short years, established a fearsome reputation as one of the world's most daring, ruthless and imaginative counter-insurgency units. Fully multiracial, this regiment was to prove that black operatives were as effective as their white counterparts. Accounting for nearly 70 percent of enemy guerrilla casualties, directly and indirectly, the regiment faded away, a political embarrassment, at Zimbabwean independence in 1980. This is the definitive account of this legendary unit's history, written and compiled by the regiment's founder, Lieutenant-Colonel Ron Reid-Daly
