Foreword by Ian D. Heppingstone. Signed by the Author (compiler). Tipped in portraits of Meena Bussell (1874-1944) and Mary Elizabeth Thomson / Herbert-Noyes (1856-1925). In mArch 1830, the four Bussell brothers - John, Vernon, Charles and Alfred - arrived in the Swan River Colony in the "Warrior" and moved to Agusta, to become its first settlers. "Wonnerup", "Broadwater", "Ellensbrook", Margaret River, "Wallcliffe". pp. 100 SCARCE #1217

The Bussells are a distinguished pioneering family. Brothers Alfred, John, Charles, Lenox and Vernon emigrated to Western Australia from England in 1829 after their clergyman father died. The Bussells were part of the first settlement party in Augusta.

They eventually moved to Vasse and once they were settled their mother (Frances) and sisters (Mary, Elizabeth and Charlotte) arrived from England to join them.

Alfred married a local woman, Ellen Heppingstone, and they moved to a 730 hectare land holding which they called Ellen's Brook, this is located near Yallingup. When this property was destroyed by fire, they built Walcliffe House, near the mouth of the Margaret River. It was the centerpiece of a 24,000 hectare property extending from Cowaramup to the Donnelly River.

Alfred and Ellen's daughter Grace made world news headlines for her part in the rescue of 50 passengers from the Georgette which was wrecked off the coast at Redgate Beach in 1876.

Ellensbrook, a simple stone cottage with a brook nearby, has been restored by the National Trust and is open to the public. Wallcliffe House is in private hands. The Bussell family name lives on in the town of Busselton and the Bussell Highway.
