The Eyes of Damien Parer is a biographical book about the legendary Australian war photographer Damien Parer. Authored by Frank Legg and published in 1963, the book details Parer’s life, his devout Catholic faith, and his career as a frontline combat cameraman during World War II.
Parer revolutionized war reporting by using handheld cameras to capture the intimate, human side of combat. His footage of Australian troops during the gruelling Kokoda Track campaign in New Guinea was released as Kokoda Front Line!, which won Australia’s first-ever Academy Award.
Known for his bravery, Parer regularly marched into the line of fire alongside soldiers, driven by his philosophy that his work was a form of prayer. He was tragically killed in action by a Japanese machine gunner in 1944 on the island of Peleliu.
