He was a world endurance swimmer extraordinaire, and that might have been enough for most people – but Des had been a racehorse owner, a publican, an award-winning sports documentary maker, a lecturer, a ‘Sportsman of the Year’ nominee (3 times), a Member of the British Empire (MBE), a Papal Knight, and a family man yet, even that doesn’t do his extraordinary life justice. He was a man with charisma, fearless loyalty and immense generosity.
