    • Frederick Wordsworth Ward (c. 1835 – 25 May 1870), better known by the self-styled pseudonym of Captain Thunderbolt, was an Australian bushranger renowned for escaping from Cockatoo Island, and also for his reputation as the “gentleman bushranger” and his lengthy survival, being the longest-roaming bushranger in Australian history.

    • Regarding Captain Thunderbolt only two things are not in dispute: the quality of the horses he stole and rode, and the fact that he never killed or injured those whom he robbed or who went in pursuit of him. Everything else is the subject of controversy. Was he Frederick Ward, as the gravestone in the old Uralla cemetery attests, or was he Frederick Britten, as has been claimed by some writers?
