New and familiar voices present the diversity of Australian gardens in these witty, sad, and informative contributions. Complimented by a wealth of garden images, plans, sketches, drawings, paintings, engravings, and photographs, these gardens are portrayed through a variety of sources, including previously unpublished letters and diary entries of ordinary people reveling in or struggling with their gardens, informed advice from newspapers and magazines, and extracts from Australian fiction, non-fiction, gardening catalogs, and planting guides.

Katie Holmes is the author of Spaces in Her Day and coeditor of several anthologies, including Freedom Bound 11. She is a senior lecturer in women’s studies and history at La Trobe University and coordinator of the Culture of Gardens project. Sue Martin is the author of many articles and chapters on gardens in 19th-century Australia in publications as varied as the Victorian Naturalist and the American Journal Studies in the History of Gardens and Designed Landscapes. She is a senior lecturer in English at La Trobe University and a coordinator of the Culture of Gardens project. Kylie Mirmohamadi is a research associate on the Culture of Gardens project. pp. 272 Beautifully illustrated First Edition #1218 ISBN 10: 0522851037 ISBN 13: 9780522851038
