BUILDING ARCHITECTURE –

Examines the people behind some of Australia’s better known building projects from 1788 to the present. It looks at how early pioneers adapted such unfamiliar materials as eucalypt timber, cabbage tree palm and wattle to the building methods they knew, and how they developed new methods, like brick veneer, that were uniquely Australian. Brian Carroll describes large building projects such as the building of the Overland Telegraph, the Eastern Goldfields Water scheme, the Trans Australian Railway, Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The book also pays tribute to Albert Jennings, the builder of 80,000 Australian houses. There is also a description of the plans for Australia’s new Parliament House in Canberra.
