The book begins with Ellis Rowan (1847-1922), intrepid explorer and flower painter, and continues through to Joy Hester (1920-1960). While not pretending to be an exhaustive coverage of all the women artists of the period covered, it nevertheless gives a representative and stimulating picture of something akin to a ‘movement’ in Australian art, which will go far towards enhancing the prestige of women as artists and providing inspiration to present day women and to artists of future generations.
