AUSTRALIANA AUSTRALIAN FAUNA & FLORA AGRICULTURE ABORIGINAL

History of Natural Sciences Biological Sciences.

This publication tells the story of a family who came to Australia in 1873 seeking refuge. Maurice and his wife Evlampia, and their young children Nicholas, Waldemar and Ludmilla, arrived in Darwin (then Palmerston) at a time when yet another pioneering attempt at permanent settlement was being made. This work inevitably presents a snapshot of the history of the George Brown Botanic Gardens which was established at its current site in 1886. The involvement of the Holtze family in shaping the Northern Territory is particularly rich and diverse. As their contributions and the Holtze family name have become integrated within the region’s pioneering history, this research culminates with a chapter dedicated to the numerous local landmarks and legacies with which some members of the family are associated.
