AUSTRALIANA Exploration –

The book starts by setting the scene of Australia in the mid-19th century — what was known of the interior, prior attempts (failures and partial successes) at exploring, the colonial impetus, the stakes of discovering viable overland routes.

It follows Stuart’s successive expeditions from 1858 through to 1862. These include the earlier unsuccessful forays, dealing with the challenges of water scarcity, extreme heat, difficult geography, failing health, and his own perseverance.

The narrative gives attention to how Stuart’s route-finding evolved, how he learned from previous failures, interacted with Indigenous guides or trackers, and gradually built up to the ultimate crossing of the continent (south to north, through the centre) in 1862.

Mudie also provides maps, facsimiles, plates, and illustrative material to help readers understand the geography, logistics, and human dimension of the journeys.

The closing chapters reflect on the significance of Stuart’s achievements: the routes he opened, the cost (physical, personal, environmental, colonial), and how his journey has been remembered in Australian history and culture.
