This history of Australians in New Guinea focuses on the experiences of the author’s family who lived in Rabaul. Discusses the fall of Rabaul to the Japanese in 1942, with the loss of over 1000 Australian civilians and soldiers and the sinking of the Montevido Maru which carried many Australian civilian and military prisoners. Critically examines, using primary sources, the responses of the Australian and the New Guinea administration to the Japanese invasion of New Guinea and discusses events after the war had ended.
