As Ms Bassett explains in an Author’s note the story is authentic throughout, quoting Ms King’s letters and chatty journals full of charm and lintelligence as she chronicles her observations with dry wit and clever perceptions – an enjoyble picture of the colony’s early years. But where her voice is absent the author has filled in the gaps from the historical records.
