Since the Aga Khan Award for Architecture was begun in 1977, it has been in the forefront of recognising the full impact of social and environmental upheaval on the built environment in Third World Countries. Architecture for Islamic societies today blends tradition with modernity, focusing on sustainability, cultural identity, and spiritual values, often seen in projects recognized by the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, addressing challenges like globalization through innovative designs, conservation, and integrating principles like privacy (in homes) and communal spaces (in mosques like the courtyard/ṣaḥn) within contemporary contexts, moving beyond just mosques and tombs to encompass urbanism and housing.
