“The power which can be delivered by any engine in which a fuel is burned with air is, in the last analysis, limited by the rate at which it can take in air, combine it with fuel, and reject the products. The key to high sustained power output is easy breathing. There must also, of course, be effective utilisation of the air within the machine, but without an adequate air supply high power simply can not be developed. Some of the energy released from the fuel on combustion has to be used to pull air in and to push combustion products out. The smaller this amount of energy can be made, obviously, the greater will be both the useful work available and the efficiency of the engine. Best of all will be to make use for this purpose of some of the energy that otherwise is just carried away with the combustion products, and cannot be directly transformed into shaft power.”
